This can be done but it is not the sole therapy available to menopause sufferers as there are many kinds of intervention available for those who cannot sleep. You could cool your room, although, if you have somebody sleeping in the bed with you, this may be a little more difficult, but you can always get them an extra blanket.

Many people complain of sleeping warmer. If you have too many covers on or your dressing to warm sleep that is one issue. But sometimes neither of these are the problem and in the worst-case scenario night sweats are early signs of cancer.
In a higher percentage of cases menopause or Peri-menopause is a more common cause. There is also a condition called Idiopathic Hyperthyroidism in which the body causes excess sweat with no apparent medical reasons.
In other cases an infection may be at the root of the problem. Inflammation of the heart valves tuberculosis, or even within the bones may cause night sweats. AIDS has a night sweat effect as well as abscesses. In any of these situations medical histories will be reviewed by the treating physicians and test run to help determine if the cause is medical. As mentioned earlier night sweats are an early sign of some cancers especially lymphoma.
There are numerous medications that will have night sweats as a side effect. Blood thinners , anti-depressants, medications taken to lower fevers can lead to night sweats. And lets not forget Viagra is a possibility here. No matter what you never get the deep restorative sleep you need if your body temperature is higher because of any of any of these reasons.

IF YOUR TOO HOT OR TOO COLD, YOU WILL WAKE UP
CONTROLLING YOUR BODY TEMPERATURE THE RIGHT WAY IS IMPORTANT
If your having problems sleeping, kicking off covers, waking up multiple times a night, this is heat induced insomnia. It may be caused by the medication someone is taking or connected to a life change. Either way about 32% of American adults deal with temperature induced insomnia. It is very important to pay attention to your bedroom temperature. To hot , you wake up. To cold, you wake up. Keeping your bedroom temperature around 68 degree's is idea. Remember to cold even with a lot of blankets will cause you problems in going back to sleep when you do wake up.
Keeping the room to cold even with a lot of blankets will cause insomnia. So a nice even temperature is what is required to sleep better. Even with many blankets this will affect your ability to go back to sleep. If you think about it with a cold room your still under the blankets and the temperature swings are under the blankets not above it.
When you go to sleep your set point for sleep for body temperature -- the temperature your brain is trying to achieve -- goes down, think of it as the internal thermostat." If it's too cold, or too hot, the body struggles to achieve this set point. A mild drop in temperature induces sleep. If it is to hot or to cold this interrupts your body's ability to maintain its required set point for even sleep.
Everyone's comfortable room temperature is different from person to person. It can range from 65 to 72 degree's. But the comfort of your bodies temperature is important for you to go into REM sleep. Without a balance in your sleeping atmosphere you never get the deep restorative sleep that is required for better health. Experts agree that how comfortable you are will affect how long and deep you sleep.
Experts from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, for instance, advise thinking of a bedroom as a cave: It should cool, quiet, and dark. (Bats follow this logic and are champion sleepers, getting in 16 hours a day.) Be careful that your pillows cause you to be to warm and are part of the problem especially memory foam. And put socks on your feet, as cold feet, in particular, can be very disruptive to sleep.
WHY DOES THE OUTLAST MATTRESS PAD WORK?
NASA TECHNOLOGY ENDS TEMPERATURE SWINGS AT NIGHT
Outlast technology's phase change materials, incorporated into cloth, interacts with the skin's temperature to offer a buffer against temperature swings. PCMs are materials that will absorb, store and release heat as the material changes from solid to liquid and back to solid.Water changing from solid ( ice ) to liquid is an example of this phenomenon. During each phase change big amounts of heat are absorbed or released.
Micro encapsulation is how you capture minuscule amounts of phase change materials in a shell material so the phase change materials are permanently enclosed and protected. The protecting plastic shell is awfully sturdy and engineered to bear textile production methods employed in fiber, yarn spinning, weaving, knitting, and coating applications.Outlast Technologies micro encapsulated PCMs ( mPCMs ) are called Thermocules. Thermocules can then be applied as a finishing on fabrics or infused into fibers in the producing process.
So with this n.a.s.a. tech, when your hot the mattress pad and pillows take the extra heat away storing it helping your body temperature stay cooler. If you get too cool the heat will be released back to you warming you. When you lay down on an OUTLAST MATTRESS PAD, you will feel a coolness that lets you know you sleep will not be interrupted by the temperature spikes which wake you up causing you to kick off the blankets. Sleep with your temperature held in balance all night long.
HOW OUTLAST MATERIAL WORKS
Severe Hot Flashes Associated With Chronic Insomnia
As many as 85 percent of menopausal women experience hot flashes, sensations of high temperature that may also mean sweating, according to background information in the article. Hot flashes often take place in the course of the night and have been associated with insomnia, or difficulty sleeping. The symptoms of insomnia include problems falling asleep and/or staying asleep, sleep that is not peaceful and an overall frustration with sleep quantity or quality. Since many other factors also influence sleep in menopausal women, the exact link concerning hot flashes and insomnia has been challenging to determine.
Maurice M. Ohayon, M.D., D.Sc., Ph.D., Stanford University School of Medicine, Palo Alto, Calif., conducted telephone interviews with 3,243 individuals in California, including 982 women ages 35 to 65 years, between June 2003 and April 2004. Of the women, 562 (57.2 percent) were premenopausal; 219 (22.3 percent) were perimenopausal, meaning that they had irregular menstrual cycles with at least one period in the preceding year; and 201 (20.5 percent) were postmenopausal, or had reported no menstrual bleeding in the prior year. Hot flashes were defined as mild if they usually did not involve sweating, moderate if they mostly involved sweating but did not require a woman to end the endeavor she was pursuing and grave if they typically involved sweating and did require a woman to finish an activity.
About 33 percent of the women reported having hot flashes, including 12.5 percent of the premenopausal women, 79 percent of perimenopausal women and 39.3 percent of postmenopausal women. Of those who had hot flashes, about half reported that they were typically mild, while about one-third had moderate and about 15 percent had acute hot flashes. More than 81 percent of women with regular acute hot flashes had symptoms of chronic sleeplessness. These women reported problems falling fast asleep, non-restful sleep and overall discontent with their sleep patterns on a regular basis (at least three nights a week for at least the preceding six months). Women with mild hot flashes did not report these problems any more repeatedly than did women with no hot flashes. Women were also more likely to suffer problems staying asleep as their hot flashes became more difficult.
The researchers also examined how insomnia related to women's menopausal status and found that women in perimenopause were more likely to have problems falling asleep, non-restful sleep and overall unhappiness with sleep. One-third of perimenopausal and postmenopausal women reported that they assumed insomnia was correlated to the development of menopause.
"This study provides evidence that serious hot flashes are associated with chronic insomnia in women aged 35 to 65 years," the authors write. "The dramatic escalation in insomnia in women with severe hot flashes indicates that severity of hot flashes should be routinely assessed in all studies of menopause.
"Treating hot flashes could increase sleep quality and decrease the deleterious cost of chronic insomnia," they conclude.
