Black And White Stock Photos Free To Use However You See Fit

Updated on April 8, 2013

Free Black and White Stock Photos

The role of black and white photography is well known in artistic circles, but few people don't realize how valuable it can be when used as a stock image. A good b&w stock photo can give almost any article a facelift as it makes the reader feel that there is just a hint of refinement in what is written. They're also a smart choice to make if you already have a lot of color pictures (to break things up a little).

Most of the pictures on this lens are completely free to use in any way you see fit. The only thing that I ask is that you somehow give credit or link back to this page if you can. The only pics not eligible for free use would be the ones with attributions and links associated with them. These photos belong to some great people over on flickr and while they allow other people to use them, some may require attribution or have other restrictions on them. I urge you to visit those pics to read the rules before you use them in any way.

Black and white stock photos that don't have an attribution were taken by me - YellowHammer.

Mysterious Light Shining Through A Tree - Would you be spooked if you saw this at night?

The light source was actually from a light pole. The fact that you can't see the pole itself comes from choosing a good angle and the light drowning it out. It was 5 a.m. when I took this - and very cold.

Black & White Photo Of An Old Barn - I believe it was used to hang tobacco in at one point.

Your eye is immediately drawn to the barn because there is so little of it showing in the image. Strange how that works, isn't it?

A Very Old Maple Tree - Intimidating isn't it?

Black and white stock photos such as this may be common, but always feel me with a sense of wonder. We are so lucky that we have such wonderful things on our planet.

Animal Skulls - Creepy pictures are always cool, aren't they?

This photo was taken while a very dangerous looking dog was looking at me intently only 20 or so yards away. I know that it was waiting for me to take just one more step toward it before coming after me. Lucky for me, I was smart enough not to take it.

The Beauty Of A Black Rose - If only they really existed.

Taking pictures of snow is never easy, but changing this photo into a black and white image in Photoshop really improved it, I think. The rose, by the way, is a fake one. I don't think that takes anything away from this wonderful black and white photo, though.

Black and White Sunrise - From a different perspective.

When rays of sunlight are a part of your picture, be sure to take several continuous shots. It's amazing how they shift and move on you. One second you have the perfect shot, the next - nothing.

Black and White Photography Tips With Craig Golding - Keep in mind that not all color photos will look good as a b&w.

A Very Spooky Shot Of The Moon - Would it surprise you to know that I got this shot in October?

If I hadn't had my camera on a tripod, I'm convinced I would have never gotten this shot. It's also important to note that the color image looks almost identical to the black and white image. I changed it to b&w because it just felt right.

Old House and Vines - Vines always add to a picture.

I actually took a shot of this house without the vines. The result was a very boring picture. One photography exercise I like to do when I think a picture will be boring is to think of ways to spice up the same pic. The answer was right behind me. The difference was substantial. Changing the pic from color to b&w made an even bigger difference.

Tree Silhouette During Sunrise - Darkness can be your friend.

This is one of my earlier shots that I ever took. A good friend of mine (photography teacher) told me that it was good enough to be sent to a stock photography site and used in a magazine. That made me feel good. I'm very proud of it, as it required me getting up quite early to get.
